Translating Personal Documents for Official Purposes – It’s Not as Easy as You Think
September 7, 2023
Many people think they can translate their own personal documents for official purposes or simply have a friend do the translations. However, it is not as simple as that. Vital records and personal documents such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, divorce documents, death certificates, academic qualifications, degrees and diplomas, baptismal certificates, financial statements, school transcripts, passport pages, police records, medical reports, immigration forms, and all others require certified translation in order to fulfil the requirements (legal or otherwise) in various situations, such as immigration hearings, legal proceedings, civil status matters, business and financial transactions, healthcare, and education, among a plethora of others.
Certified translations must be completed by qualified, human translators who are not just proficient in the respective language pairs but who are also experienced with the terminology used in the respective area of discipline and who clearly understand the essentials of certified translation. Furthermore, in order for these translations to be legally acceptable, they must be accompanied by certificates containing specific language attesting to the accuracy of the translations. These certificates of accuracy must be sworn (or signed) before a notary public who is qualified in the relevant county and whose commission is valid.
Whether you’re applying for a marriage certificate, petitioning for divorce, filing for green card, citizenship by naturalization, DACA renewal, or some other immigration status, seeking admission into an American educational institution, administering an estate, adopting a child, or obtaining medical attention and thus are required to present records from a non-English-speaking country, you will require professionally translated documentation from the respective foreign language into English.
If the translation is required for use in a non-English-speaking country, translations are usually done from English into the respective language, and in some cases, additional services such as authentication and apostilles are required. You will most likely need help navigating the entire process. This is where we come in. Over the past 16 years, The Language Shop, has developed a top notch standard for the preparation of certified translations with 100-percent acceptance by the respective offices for which the documents are being prepared.
